The Arabic word “Iwan” means Hall.
Iwan Is found in many of the marvelous mosques around the world.
it is serving a number of functions including, prayer, teaching, lodging of teachers and students, keeping books and as a reading library as well as a number of charitable activities in stopping stations on the road of pilgrims intended to serve the ill and the needy.
More importantly it became the area in which traditional circles of knowledge formed and classes would gather to pass down the sacred sciences, generation to generation.
Even today many great mosques around the world hold classes under their “Iwans.”
